While clinical decisions in the management of endometriosis- suspected infertility are often difficult due to the lack of high-quality evidence and incomplete scientific knowledge behind the mechanisms that link endometriosis to subfertility , the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and other leading organisations such the World Endometriosis Society (WES 2013) and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence's (NICE 2017) have recognised that laparoscopic treatment of endometriosis improves fertility.

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) Practice Committee, for infertile women with suspected stage I/II endometriosis, a decision must be made whether to perform laparoscopy before offering treatment with ovulation drugs or IVF .
